It’s an exciting time of year for kids as we get back to school!  For those of you who got braces during the break, here are a few tips from us to help make the transition back to school a little easier…

In the Backpack:

Pack a few items in your backpack to keep your braces clean and to help if you happen to have a poking wire.

  • Toothbrush, possibly travel sized and always with soft bristles
  • Toothpaste
  • Orthodontic wax, to temporarily help should you have a poking wire
  • Orthodontic floss picks
  • Orthodontic elastics (if you wear them)
  • Your aligner case, to keep from misplacing or losing your aligner during lunch or snacking

Appointments During School Hours:

While we do try to accommodate our school aged patients with as many before and after school appointments as possible, it may be necessary to miss some school for certain appointments, especially longer ones.  We can provide you with a school excuse every time you need one.

On the Menu:

Try to choose healthy lunch and drink options.  Less sugar with help avoid cavities and unwanted staining of the teeth during braces.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Remember to avoid hard foods (like hard candy or ice) or chewy/sticky foods (like caramel and taffy) so you don’t break the braces.

If you’ve just had an orthodontic adjustment and your teeth are a little sore, you may want to pack a lunch with softer foods for the next day.

Playing Sports:

If you play sports (even just in P.E. class), remember to ask us for a mouthguard.  Having braces can help to stabilize your teeth if you happen to get bumped in the mouth, however, you will need a mouthguard to protect the inside of your mouth from being injured should you fall or get bumped in the mouth.
